Our handcrafted Medieval Sugar Loaf Helmet, is inspired by the iconic helmet that was worn across Europe in the 12th to 15th centuries. With a tall pointed crown, narrow eye slits, and enclosed face protection, this helmet has the powerful appearance of the classic Templar knight helmet used during the High Middle Ages.
Made from durable 18-gauge mild steel, this sugarloaf greathelm is strong with managable weight for long hours of wear during LARP battles, cosplay, renfairs, stage and theatre use. The polished steel finish gives the helmet an authentic historical look.
The pointed top of the sugar loaf helmet was not just was visual decoration but the conical shape helped in deflecting downward blows from swords and other weapons, thereby improving the protection in battles. This design evolved from the earlier Great Helm and became popular among knights and crusaders during the 13th and 14th centuries.
The “sugarloaf” helmet was named so because its conical, rounded peak resembled the shape in which refined white sugar was traditionally manufactured, sold, and stored during the medieval era
For comfort during use, the helmet includes an inner liner that cushions the head and helps reduce pressure during use. The adjustable chin strap with buckle keeps the helmet secure and stable when in use. Carefully placed ventilation holes improve airflow and help keep the wearer comfortable.
