Roman Lorica Squamata Pauldrons, Scale Armor

The Roman Lorica Squamata Pauldrons are handcrafted with overlapping 20-gauge mild steel scales securely attached to a genuine leather backing. The layered scale construction creates the distinctive look associated with Roman scale armor.

A shaped steel shoulder plate covers the upper portion of each pauldron, while rows of overlapping scales extend downward over the upper arm for coverage.

Overlapping Steel Scale Design

Rows of individually attached steel scales overlap one another to create a flexible layered construction.

The scale pattern also visually matches traditional Lorica Squamata Armor, making these pauldrons suitable for pairing with a scale cuirass or scale skirt.

Genuine Leather Backing

The steel scales are securely mounted onto a strong genuine leather backing. The leather provides a flexible base for the scales while helping the pauldrons sit naturally around the upper arm.

Shaped Steel Shoulder Plate

Each Steel Scale Shoulder Armor features a large curved steel plate over the shoulder. Its rounded shape follows the shoulder area and complements the smaller overlapping scales below.

Adjustable Leather Straps

The spaulders have genuine leather straps with metal buckles for adjustable fastening around the upper arm. Multiple adjustment holes allow the straps to be tightened or loosened according to the wearer.

The upper attachment points can be used to secure the pauldrons to compatible armor, straps or garment attachment points depending on the wearer’s setup.

Inspired by Roman Scale Armor

Scale armor was used by numerous ancient cultures, including the Romans. Roman scale armor is commonly known as Lorica Squamata and consisted of many small metal scales arranged in overlapping rows and attached to a flexible backing.

These Roman Scale Shoulder Armor pieces take inspiration from that layered construction.

The Roman Lorica Squamata Pauldrons are suitable for LARP, cosplay, Roman and medieval costumes, Renaissance Faires, theatre, film productions, themed events and display.

Care Instructions

• Wipe the steel plates and scales with a clean, dry cloth after use.
• Apply a thin coat of oil occasionally to help protect the mild steel from rust.
• Keep them away from prolonged exposure to water and moisture.
• Store in a cool, dry place.

Note: Each pair of pauldrons is individually handcrafted. Small variations in the leather, steel finish, scale positioning and surface texture are natural.
