Durable Roman Scale Armor

The Roman Lorica Squamata Cuirass is handcrafted from rows of 20-gauge mild steel scales securely attached to a strong genuine leather backing. The overlapping arrangement creates the layered appearance associated with ancient Roman scale armor while allowing the cuirass to remain flexible enough for comfortable movement.

Steel scales cover both the front and back, providing a complete scale-armored appearance from different angles.

Genuine Leather Backing

The individual scales are fixed to a genuine leather base. The leather provides a strong and flexible foundation that allows the cuirass to move more naturally with the wearer.

Adjustable Side Straps

Multiple genuine leather side straps with metal buckles connect the front and back sections of the cuirass.

The straps feature multiple adjustment holes, allowing the fit around the torso to be tightened or loosened as required.

Scale armor has a long history and was used by several ancient cultures. In the Roman world, this style of armor is commonly known as Lorica Squamata.

It was constructed using numerous small metal scales in overlapping rows and attached to a flexible backing. The overlapping construction gave a scale-like appearance with  flexibility.

This Lorica Squamata Armor takes inspiration from that recognizable historical construction while being made for modern costume, LARP and event use.

Flexible Overlapping Scale Construction

Each row overlaps the row below it, creating the distinctive layered appearance of Steel Scale Armor. Because the scales are individually attached rather than formed as one solid plate, they can move slightly with the leather backing as the wearer changes position.

The Roman Lorica Squamata Cuirass is ideal for LARP, cosplay, Roman costumes, Renaissance Faires, theatre productions, film use, themed events and display.

Care Instructions

• Wipe the steel scales with a soft, dry cloth after use.
• Apply a light coat of oil occasionally to help protect the mild steel from rust.
• Keep the cuirass dry and avoid exposure to water.
• Clean the genuine leather gently.
• Store in a cool, dry place away from moisture and humidity.

Note: Each cuirass is individually handcrafted. Minor variations in the genuine leather, steel finish, scale positioning and surface texture are natural characteristics.
