Small Buckler Shield: Hand-Forged Steel with Brass Rim
This small buckler shield is crafted from hand-forged 16 gauge steel, for strength, structure and an authentic medieval appearance. The front is polished to a bright finish, so stands out visually whether carried in hand or displayed on a wall.
The outer edge is fitted with a solid brass rim, polished for decorative look. The brass not only enhances the overall look but adds contrast against the steel surface.
The back of the shield buckler is painted to help resist rust and corrosion. A sturdy steel handle runs across the interior and is reinforced with wood, for a secure and comfortable grip during use.
History and Use of the Buckler
A buckler is a small shield held in the fist rather than strapped to the forearm. It was used in medieval Europe between the 12th and 16th centuries, especially in sword fighting. Due to its compact size, it helped in quick movements, deflections, and close combat.
A small shield such as a buckler was made for agility. It allowed fighters to control an opponent’s weapon, and strike without restricting movement. Its light weight and manageable size made it highly practical.
