This Viking Spectacle Helmet, is a historically inspired helmet based on 10th-century finds from Norway and Eastern Europe. With its “spectacle” eye guard, this helmet provided extra facial defense with visibility, an great blend of protection and practical use by Viking fighters.
Hand-crafted from 18-gauge mild steel, the helmet has a butted chainmail camail made from 10 mm, 16-gauge steel rings that protect the neck and shoulders without restricting movement. The interior has a genuine-leather liner, for both comfort and stability during combat or long hours of use.
With an inner circumference of about 68 cm and a total weight of 1.6 kg.
The “Spectacle Helm,” also known as the Gjermundbu-style helmet, takes its name from the famous discovery in Norway, where the only complete Viking helmet ever found was unearthed in a 10th-century burial mound. Its eye and nose guard provided revolutionary facial protection and quickly became a symbol of Norse ingenuity and rank.
Such Spectacle Helmets were commonly paired with a mail coif or camail, creating an overlapping defense.
