The Viking Klappenrock Woolen Coat (also known as the Jarl Kaftan or Flap-Skirt Coat) is an outerwear worn by Viking and Slavic nobles of the Early Middle Ages (8th–11th centuries). From finds at Haithabu (Hedeby) and Birka.
Made from 100% recycled wool (420 g/m²), the Klappenrock provides natural insulation and breathability, ideal for outdoor markets, festivals. The diamond twill decorative trim, woven from an 80% wool and 20% nylon blend, shows the authentic Viking textile patterns that were used to show wealth and rank.
The coat has the traditional overlapping front closure, a hallmark of Viking and Slavic kaftans. The garment can be secured with a belt to be worn for warmth or open for mobility. The wide sleeves and straight cut help in easy layering.
Historically, such garments were symbols of prestige. Archaeological and pictorial evidence from Scandinavia, the Baltic, and Kievan Rus’ suggests that the Klappenrock served as a cold-weather coat and as a mark of elevated social status.
