Solid Brass Viking Fibula Cloak Brooch
Simple, functional and decorative, this Brass Penannular Brooch is a traditional-style garment fastener for securing cloaks, shawls and tunics.
Handcrafted from solid brass, the brooch has an open ring with a movable pin that passes through the fabric to help hold the garment in place. Its warm brass colour also adds a distinctive detail to medieval and Viking-inspired clothing.
Choose from Round End, Scroll End or Rolled End designs to suit the style of your outfit.
Each Brass Penannular Brooch has its own shape and character, allowing you to choose a brooch according to your garment and preferred appearance.
Round End
A simple and compact design with rounded terminals. Its understated appearance works well with lighter cloaks, shawls and simple historical outfits.
Scroll End
Features decorative curled terminals that give the brooch a more detailed look. A good choice when you want the cloak fastener to become a noticeable part of your outfit.
Rolled End
A design with rolled terminals and a traditional penannular shape. Its appearance pairs well with wool cloaks and heavier historical garments.
This Brass Cloak Brooch is made from solid brass, which is durable and long lasting.
Natural brass can gradually darken and develop a patina through exposure to air, moisture and use. This is a normal characteristic of brass. The surface can be polished with a suitable brass polish whenever a brighter appearance is preferred.
How to Use a Penannular Brooch
A penannular brooch uses its open ring, pin and fabric tension to secure a garment.
Pass the pin through the fabric of your cloak or garment. Bring the pin through the opening between the ends of the ring, then rotate the ring so the pin rests securely against it.
Once positioned correctly, the fabric helps maintain tension between the pin and ring.
Historical Inspiration
Fibulae and brooches were used as practical garment fasteners across the ancient and medieval world. Before modern buttons and zippers became common, pins and brooches provided a simple way to secure clothing.
Penannular and ring-shaped brooches are associated with historical clothing from parts of northern and western Europe.
