Strong Protection with Traditional Construction
The Round Riveted Chainmail Leggings are handcrafted from 16 gauge mild steel using 10 mm internal diameter round riveted rings in a traditional 4-in-1 weave. The 10 mm rings give excellent flexibility, strength, and freedom of movement, while the 16 gauge steel gives durability for demanding use.
These chainmail chausses have a natural steel finish and extend from the upper leg down to fully cover the feet for complete lower leg protection. Two sturdy chainmail loops at the top allow the leggings to be securely attached to a belt or arming garment.
History of Chainmail Leggings
Medieval leg armor or chainmail chausses became common from the 11th century onwards. Knights and soldiers wore them to protect their legs while still allowing them to walk, ride horses, and fight comfortably.
Chausses were usually worn over padded clothing and fastened to a belt or arming garment to prevent them from slipping during movement.
Traditional Riveted Construction
Each ring is individually riveted using the traditional medieval method, creating a much stronger and more durable construction than butted chainmail.
The 16 gauge steel provides excellent durability, while the 10 mm rings allow the chausses to remain flexible enough for walking, riding.
Ideal for Historical Events & Costume Use
These Round Riveted Chainmail Leggings are ideal for historical reenactments, medieval combat, LARP, stage combat, Renaissance fairs, cosplay, film productions, costume events, museums, and collectors. Their full-foot design provides complete lower leg coverage.
Care Instructions
- Wipe away the protective oil before first use.
- Apply a light coat of oil occasionally to maintain the natural steel finish.
- Store in a cool, dry place away from moisture.
- Dry properly if exposed to water.
Note: Each pair of chainmail leggings is meticulously handcrafted, link by link, from thousands of interlinked rings, delivering exceptional historical accuracy, strength, and unmistakable artistry of traditional methods.
As each piece is assembled entirely by hand, you may occasionally notice a rivet that sits slightly proud, feels subtly looser than others, or even a missing ring. Such small variations are a natural hallmark of genuine, artisan-made mail, just as in the Middle Ages, and reflect the human care invested. Any adjustment, if desired, can be easily made using basic pliers and a spare ring, preserving both integrity and historical authenticity.
