This medieval wooden shield is inspired by the round shields which were used across Europe during the early and high Middle Ages. Shields of this type were important defensive tools on the battlefield, for protection while giving freedom of movement and strong offensive tactics with the central boss.
The shield is crafted from 12 mm thick solid wood, carefully shaped and polished to a dark, rich finish. Wood was preferred for shields because it absorbed impact better than solid metal, helping reduce shock to the warrior’s arm during combat.
Around the edge, the shield has 18 gauge steel binding, which reinforces the rim and protects the wood from splitting during strikes. At the centre is a 16 gauge steel conical umbo (shield boss). The umbo was designed to protect the hand and was also used to punch, deflect blows.
With a diameter of 76 cm (29 7/8 inches), this large round shield gives excellent coverage without being overly heavy. The back of the shield is painted black for durability and look, and it has a sturdy wooden handle along with a genuine leather strap for comfortable use.
This medieval battle shield is great for LARP, stage combat, costume use, or as a display piece. Its design also closely reflects the form of a Viking round shield which had similar features.
