The medieval sleeveless surcoat stands among the most iconic garments of medieval Europe, symbolizing both elegance and utility. Worn by noblewomen, merchants, and commoners from the 12th to 15th centuries, it was traditionally layered over a kirtle, gown, or underdress. Its purpose was twofold: to protect the finer fabrics underneath and to create a graceful outer look. With its open sides and flowing cut, it allowed freedom of movement, ventilation, and a layered look that highlighted the garments beneath.

Our Medieval Sleeveless Surcoat is crafted in two historically inspired fabric variations:

  • 100% Recycled Wool (Red) – Provides warmth, structure, and durability, making it ideal for outdoor events, cooler climates, or evening gatherings at reenactments and fairs.

  • 100% Linen (Blue) – Naturally breathable and lightweight, perfect for summer festivals, LARP in warmer regions, and extended wear during long historical events. Linen was one of the most common fabrics in medieval Europe, prized for its strength and comfort. Woven from the flax plant, it stayed cool in summer and layered well in winter. Easy to wash and long-lasting, it was the preferred fabric for undergarments, veils, and headwear across all classes of society.

Both stay true to historical tailoring with their wide side openings, which not only make layering effortless but also create striking contrasts when worn over dresses or tunics in complementary colors. This design was a hallmark of medieval fashion, allowing the wearer to display status, wealth, and style through visible layers.

The surcoat’s loose drape ensures comfort without compromising authenticity, whether you portray a lady of the court, a traveling merchant, or a commoner engaged in daily life. From SCA battles and LARP campaigns to Renaissance fairs and stage productions, this piece is versatile, practical, and steeped in historical charm.
