Our Medieval Shield umbo, is hand forged from 16 gauge durable steel, and has a hammered surface just like that of historic warriors.
In medieval Europe, a shield boss which was also called umbo, was not for decoration. It formed the reinforced heart of the shield, protecting the warrior’s hand while creating a curved surface that deflected incoming blows. In close combat, warriors even used the Umbo shield offensively, striking opponents with the center.
Each piece is individually hand-forged, so each has a different hammered texture that shows the true handcrafting nature of the boss. The polished dome not only gives visual impact but also helps redirect force away from the shield’s center, making this shield boss umbo,  both functional s well as accurate.
Made for easy use and simple installation, this boss includes 6 pre-drilled holes and comes with a set of 6 matching rivets for a secure and fast attachment to your shields. The interior surface is coated with protective black paint to resist corrosion and it also gives a clean, professional finish.
Despite its solid construction, the boss weighs about 500 g, so it has a manageable weight as well as strength. Whether used for a viking shield umbo, or a knights shield boss on a display, it delivers authentic form and function.
