This Medieval monk costume is inspired by the simple robes which were worn by monks and friars in the Middle Ages. The design is inspired by the peasant clothing of the early medieval times which was then worn by religious orders with the meaning of humility, poverty and devotion.Â
Historical Background: Between the 12th – 13th centuries, monks like the Franciscans wore wool or cotton garments that were plain and undyed. Saint Francis of Assisi encouraged wearing simple clothing to reject wealth and luxury. The Medieval monk costume became known as monastic habits and were worn daily for prayer and travel. The long robe, hood, and rope belt were not for show but had practical use in monastic life. The rope belt (cincture) had knots symbolising vows such as poverty, obedience and chastity. The Medieval monk costume also closely reflects the look of the famous fictional monk Brother Cadfael, a 12th-century Benedictine monk from historical novels and television adaptations, making it ideal for themed portrayals
Product Details: The robe is made from 100% soft cotton, so it is very soft and comfortable and can be worn for long hours. It has a pullover design with a V-neck opening, with a small button at the neckline. There are no side slits, so it has a traditional, full-length monastic look. A generously sized hood is attached, for classic silhouette seen in medieval artwork and manuscripts. The costume includes a canvas rope belt, which ties easily at the waist. The fabric drapes naturally and develops a lived-in appearance with use, closely matching how historical robes aged over time.
