The Lorica Hamata is one of the most iconic and famous styles of the Roman Body Armor. It was worn by the legionaries from the late Republic through the early Imperial period. This style of chainmail was used because of its flexibility, strength and ability to protect the torso while giving proper movement in battle.
This armor is made from 18 gauge mild steel rings with an inner diameter of approximately 6 mm, which are assembled in a traditional pattern. Each round ring is secured with dome rivets, and alternating solid flat rings which help in improving strength and durability.
As a classic example of roman chainmail armor, this mail has solid brass fittings at the shoulders. These fittings help in securing the shoulder sections while giving a decorative touch seen on higher-status Roman soldiers. The design shows the structure of the Hamata Lorica, which was widely used across Roman legions for centuries. Using 6 mm ID rings creates a denser and tighter weave, which improves overall strength and durability of the armor. Smaller rings distribute force more evenly across the surface, giving better resistance to pulls and deformation. This ring size of the Lorica armor also gives a more refined, historically accurate appearance.
The flexible mail construction allows this roman mail armor to sit comfortably over a tunic or padded garment, making it suitable for display, film, or educational use.
CARE INSTRUCTIONS:
-
Wipe clean with a dry cloth after use
-
Keep the armor dry to prevent surface rust
-
Light oiling is recommended from time to time
-
Store in a cool, dry place away from moisture
Note: Each Lorica Hamata is handcrafted, link by link, from thousands of interlinked rings, delivering exceptional historical accuracy, strength, and unmistakable artistry of traditional methods.
As each piece is assembled entirely by hand, you may occasionally notice a rivet that sits slightly proud, feels subtly looser than others, or even a missing ring. Such small variations are a natural hallmark of genuine, artisan-made mail, just as in the Middle Ages, and reflect the human care invested. Any adjustment, if desired, can be easily made using basic pliers and a spare ring, preserving both integrity and historical authenticity.
