The Mainz Gladius is one of the earliest and most distinctive versions of the famous Roman short sword. Named after archaeological finds in Mainz, Germany, this type of Gladius was carried by legionaries during the late 1st century BCE and the early Roman Empire.
Unlike the later Pompeii type, the Mainz has a leaf-shaped, tapered blade which leads into a strong triangular point. Weighing at 1.7 kg for a realistic presence this design was perfect for close-quarter combat in tight Roman formations.
This collector’s sword has been carefully handcrafted to capture the look and feel of the original weapon:
-
Blade: Polished steel, double-edged with the classic Mainz profile
-
Hilt: Hardwood grip, guard, and pommel in traditional Roman style
-
Scabbard: Black leather with ornate brass fittings and suspension rings, allowing it to be displayed as the legions once carried it
This Mainz Gladius is more than just a display sword, it is a symbol of Rome’s early military might,.
