This 15th Century Steel Breastplate is inspired by transitional armor worn during the late Middle Ages and early Renaissance—a time when battlefield practicality met the flair of knightly pageantry. Made from 18-gauge mild steel, it offers a strong, wearable defense suitable for extended use, whether on the field, in costume, or as a display piece.
The breastplate is crafted from a single cold-formed sheet, following the historical design typical of late 15th-century foot soldiers and men-at-arms. A central ridge provides reinforcement and deflects blows, while the rolled neckline and side edges improve comfort and safety during wear.
At the waist, a row of decorative brass rivets gives this armor a bold, commanding look while also strengthening the curvature of the lower rim. The interior is painted black, a practical feature to protect the steel against corrosion and to enhance visual contrast.
The piece is secured with crossed leather shoulder straps and adjustable leather side belts, allowing a snug fit over gambesons, tunics, or mail hauberks. This front-only design reflects historical examples used by soldiers requiring protection, mobility, and lower cost.
