16 Gauge Steel Construction

This Italo-Norman Masked Helmet is handcrafted from durable 16 gauge mild steel and finished with a polished outer for a medieval appearance. Inside, it has a genuine leather suspension liner that helps distribute the helmet’s weight evenly across the head, making it more comfortable to wear. An adjustable leather chin strap keeps the helmet securely in place during movement.

Inspired by the Italo-Norman Helmets of the Crusades

During the 12th century, Norman knights fighting in Southern Italy and the Crusades faced a new challenge. Traditional Norman nasal helmets left much of the face exposed, making warriors vulnerable to attacks. To improve protection, armourers began attaching solid steel faceplates to the front of helmets. These fixed masks protected the eyes, cheeks, and jaw while still allowing good visibility and airflow.

This Italo-Norman Helmet depicts this important stage in medieval helmet development.

Distinctive Historical Features

One of the most recognisable features of this helmet is its forward-curving dome, inspired by the Phrygian cap shape seen in Byzantine armour. This curved profile helped guide downward sword blows away from the head.

The solid faceplate is permanently riveted to the helmet rather than fitted with a moving visor.

The Norman Faceplate Helm is suitable for historical reenactments, medieval combat events, Renaissance fairs, LARP, cosplay, theatre, collectors, and display.

Care & Maintenance

  • Your helmet arrives lightly coated with protective oil to help prevent rust during shipping and storage. Wipe away oil before first use.
  • Wipe clean with a soft, dry cloth after use.
  • Apply a light coat of oil occasionally to maintain the steel finish.
  • Store in a cool, dry place away from moisture.
  • Avoid exposure to moisture to help preserve the finish.

Note: Each Masked Norman Helmet is individually handcrafted. Variations in finish, hammer marks, and polishing are natural characteristics of handmade steel armour, making every helmet unique.
