Medieval Knightly Greaves Type D, Hand-Forged 18 Gauge Mild Steel with Adjustable Leather Straps

These late medieval-style knightly greaves provide complete protection from the knee to the ankle, combining functionality with period-inspired aesthetics. The design features a pointed knee plate (poleyn) and a pair of horizontal reinforcing ridges—features commonly found on European plate armour from the 14th–15th centuries. These elements not only strengthen the steel but also help deflect blows away from vulnerable joints.

Hand-forged from 18-gauge mild steel, each plate is shaped to follow the natural curve of the leg, ensuring a secure yet comfortable fit when worn over chausses or padded armour. The blackened interior protects against rust, while adjustable leather straps with steel buckles allow quick fastening and removal.

Historically, full greaves with integrated poleyns became a hallmark of late medieval plate armour, offering knights and men-at-arms superior lower leg defence without sacrificing mobility. This reproduction captures that same balance, durable enough for combat yet lightweight enough for extended wear.

18-gauge steel offers an excellent balance between protection and mobility. While slightly lighter than 16-gauge armour, it still provides strong defence against controlled combat strikes in  LARP settings. The reduced weight allows for greater agility, faster movement, and less fatigue during extended wear.
