A chainmail haubergeon is a shorter and more practical version of the traditional chainmail armor, to provide protection with better movement. This piece is crafted from 8 mm internal diameter rings made of 18 gauge mild steel, for a strong and flexible structure.
The construction has the same classic alternating pattern of solid and riveted rings, forming a European 4-in-1 weave. This riveting method was used in historical armor as it gave better strength and reliability compared to simple butted rings. The helps the armor to move naturally with the body.
With its half sleeves and mid-length cut, this chainmail haubergeon is lighter than full-length armor, so it is more comfortable for long hours of use. It works well as a chainmail shirt for LARP events, stage performances, and costumes. It can also be used as chainmail armor for display or educational purposes. The use of riveted chainmail gives more historical authenticity.
The blackened finish gives the chainmail a rugged, battle-worn look inspired by medieval armor. It also adds a layer of protection that helps resist surface rust during use.
This haubergeon arrives with a protective layer of oil applied to the surface. This coating helps prevent rust during shipping and storage. Before use, it is recommended to wipe off the oil. Occasional reapplication of light oil will help maintain the finish and protect the steel over time.
CARE INSTRUCTIONS:
- Wipe off oil before first use
- Apply a light coat of oil occasionally to prevent rust
- Store in a dry place when not in use
- Avoid exposure to moisture or humidity
- Clean with a dry or lightly oiled cloth after use
Note: Our chainmail is handcrafted, link by link, from thousands of interlinked rings, for exceptional historical accuracy, strength, and artistry of traditional methods.
As each piece is assembled by hand, you may occasionally notice a rivet that sits slightly proud, feels subtly looser than others, or even a missing ring. Such small variations are a natural hallmark of genuine, artisan-made mail, just as in the Middle Ages, and show the human care invested. Any adjustment, if desired, can be easily made using basic pliers and a spare ring, preserving both integrity and historical authenticity.
