These chainmail voiders (half-shirt with sleeves) are made in the historical style worn beneath plate harnesses during the later Middle Ages. Constructed from 9 mm internal diameter round riveted rings alternating with flat solid rings, this design maximizes both strength as well as flexibility. Each ring is crafted from 18-gauge mild steel and finished in a blackened coating, which not only provides additional resistance against rust but also enhances the authentic, battle-worn medieval look.

The alternating riveted and solid-ring construction is a historically accurate method that reduces weight while increasing the resilience. Worn over a padded arming garment, these voiders protect the arms, shoulders and upper torso, offering defense in both reenactment combat and costume wear.

Voiders or half-shirts were developed in the 13th to 15th centuries as plate armor became more common. While plate harnesses provided strong protection for the chest and legs, gaps remained at the joints and underarms. To counter this, chainmail voiders were worn underneath, bridging vulnerable areas while allowing for mobility.

The blackened finish gives the look of period techniques of oiling and darkening mail for both rust protection and reduced glare on the battlefield. This makes the piece not only functional but also highly authentic for history displays.
