A shield boss, also known as an umbo, was a raised fitting mounted on the front of many shields. Depending on the shield’s construction, it could cover and protect the area around the hand grip while also reinforcing the central section of the shield.

Shield bosses appeared in different shapes, sizes and materials across various periods and cultures. Roman examples are associated with the scutum, where the prominent central boss became one of the shield’s most recognizable features.
