This Birka Tarsoly Leather Bag is a faithful reconstruction of one of the most elegant leather pouches discovered in the trading settlement of Birka, Sweden—a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its rich Viking heritage.

Between the 8th and 10th centuries, Birka was a major hub for Norse trade and craftsmanship. Archaeological finds from the region reveal the Vikings’ taste. Tarsoly bags like this were not just simple pouches, they were symbols of prestige, worn on the belts of merchants, nobles, and warriors as marks of status and wealth.

This reproduction captures that same spirit of Viking artistry. Handcrafted from genuine leather, it has embossed and riveted brass fittings inspired by original Birka excavations. The brass ornaments, arranged in a traditional geometric and floral pattern, reflect the ornamental metalwork typical of high-ranking Norsemen.

The bag closes securely with a long leather strap and brass clasp, keeping your valuables safe whether you’re attending a fair, or historical event. Its sturdy construction ensures durability, while the decorative brass details add unmistakable character to any Viking or early medieval outfit.

Designed to slide easily onto belts up to 5 cm (2 inches) wide, this pouch offers both form and function.

The original Birka tarsolys were excavated from Birka, Sweden, one of the earliest and most important Viking trading towns. Artifacts from this site, now preserved at the Swedish Historical Museum and the Viking Museum Haithabu show that such bags combined leatherwork with intricate brass or bronze mounts, signifying rank and wealth.

Historically, these pouches were worn by both warriors and traders. They provided practical storage for coins, flint, and small tools, while also serving as personal emblems of status and craftsmanship.
