Lightweight Modern Version of the Medieval Aventail
This riveted chainmail aventail is inspired by the protective neck defenses worn from the 13th to 15th centuries. Traditionally attached to helmets such as bascinets and great helms, the aventail protected the neck, throat, shoulders, and lower face from cuts and blows while allowing flexibility and movement in combat. This modern version recreates the historical appearance by using lightweight aluminum for better comfort during long hours of wear in stage performances, theatre productions, films, cosplay.
Handmade Construction with Riveted and Solid Rings
The medieval aventail is handcrafted from dome riveted 16 gauge round aluminium rings with an internal diameter of approximately 10 mm in 4-in-1 weave pattern. Alternating flat solid rings are combined with the riveted rings for a historically inspired look while increasing strength. The round ring construction gives the chainmail a classic medieval look, while the lightweight aluminium makes it much easier to wear. A durable leather band is attached for securing the aventail to compatible helmets, helping it sit comfortably around the neck and shoulders during use.
Designed for Costumes, LARP, Theatre, and Film Use
Historically, medieval aventails were commonly made from iron or steel and needed regular oiling and maintenance to prevent rust. This modern aventail chainmail uses aluminum so it is rust-resistant and low-maintenance and great for modern costume and event use. The aluminum construction means no oiling is required, making it practical for repeated wear in theatre, movies, LARP, Renaissance fairs, cosplay. Its flexible drape and lightweight feel provide comfort.
CARE INSTRUCTIONS:
- Wipe with a soft dry cloth after use
- Store in a dry place when not in use
- No oiling is required
- Avoid excessive bending or crushing during storage
Note: This chainmail aventail is handcrafted, link by link, from thousands of interlinked rings, delivering exceptional historical accuracy, strength, and unmistakable artistry of traditional methods. As each piece is assembled entirely by hand, you may occasionally notice a rivet that sits slightly proud, feels subtly looser than others, or even a missing ring. Such small variations are a natural hallmark of genuine, artisan-made mail, just as in the Middle Ages, and reflect the human care invested. Any adjustment, if desired, can be easily made using basic pliers and a spare ring, preserving both integrity and historical authenticity.
Aluminium was not traditionally used in medieval armor, this is a modern lightweight version designed for theatre, film costume and display purposes only.
