Historical Inspiration
This butted chainmail haubergeon takes its shape from mail shirts of medieval Europe often called haubergeons, worn by knights and guards beneath their surcoats. Ours brings that classic silhouette to the modern costume world. Pull it over a gambeson, step into the firelight of a LARP camp or onto a festival green, and the drape and sound of real steel rings tell the story for you.
The Butted Chainmail Shirt: Material and Features
Each Butted chainmail haubergeon is assembled by hand, ring by ring, from round butted mild steel rings in a dense, flexible weave. The half-sleeve cut keeps it wearable through long event days, and the steel gives it the real weight, drape and shimmer of metal mail.
- Butted Mild Steel Rings: Hand-closed round rings in a traditional 4-in-one mail weave.
- Half Sleeves: A classic medieval shape that keeps your forearms free.
- Ring: 10 mm internal diameter, 16 gauge.
Choose Your Finish
- Black : A dark, dramatic look with less rust formation than raw steel, with a black finish.
- Natural: Raw mild steel with a traditional look. It is prone to rust, so it needs regular, proper oiling.
- ZP (Zinc Plated): Bright and shiny, highly rust resistant, with no oiling needed.
ZP and Black are the favorites for film, theater and stage. They need less maintenance, skip the oiling, and look great under stage lighting.
Versatile Uses
Turn heads at every event in a black chainmail shirt or a gleaming zinc finish that looks right from the front row to the camera lens.
Suitable for:
- LARP events and fantasy roleplay
- Cosplay and costume builds
- Renaissance Faires and medieval festivals
- Film, theater and stage productions
- Display, collections and themed decor
Care Instructions
- Natural: Oil regularly with a oil and wipe off any excess. The chainmail will arrive with a layer of oil coating on it to prevent it from rusting during shipping and storage.
- ZP: No oiling needed, wipe clean with a dry cloth.
- Black: Wipe clean after wear.
- All finishes: Dry fully after damp wear and store in a dry place.
Note: Our Chainmail Armor is meticulously handcrafted, link by link, from thousands of interlinked rings using traditional mail-making techniques.
Because each medieval chainmail is assembled by hand, you may occasionally notice a rivet that sits slightly proud, a ring that feels slightly looser than others, or a missing ring. These minor variations are natural characteristics of artisan-made chainmail rather than uniform machine production.
If adjustment is required, individual rings can generally be repositioned or replaced using pliers and a suitable spare ring.
