This Goldsborough Viking Brooch is a handcrafted replica inspired by an early Viking Age penannular brooch found in England. It is made from solid brass, with a large open ring, a long fastening pin, and two beautifully detailed circular terminals decorated. The warm golden finish gives the brooch a rich, regal look, completely enhancing the look of your cloaks, shawls, tunics, and other historical or modern outfits. The open-ring design allows the pin to pass through the fabric and hold the garment in place.

Historical Inspiration

The design is based on a 9th-10th century brooch from the famous Goldsborough hoard, discovered in 1859 at Goldsborough in North Yorkshire, England. The original brooch was made from silver and was found as part of a large Viking hoard which had precious metal objects and coins. Like many pieces in Viking hoards, some items had been damaged, and the original brooch was found without its long fastening pin. The surviving hoop and decorated terminals provide the inspiration for this reproduction.

The design has the classic shape of a Viking fibula, with its circular hoop and movable pin used to fasten clothing. Often described as an Omega brooch because of its open circular shape, this style was practical as well as decorative.

This reproduction is made from solid brass and is individually handcrafted. Brass gives the brooch its bright golden appearance and is naturally resistant to rust. With time and use, it can develop a darker patina.

Care & Maintenance

  • Wipe the brooch with a soft, dry cloth after use.
  • Keep it dry and avoid prolonged contact with water or moisture.
  • Brass naturally develops patina over time, this can be left for an aged appearance.
  • For a brighter finish, gently polish with a suitable brass polishing cloth.

Note: Each brooch is individually handcrafted, so differences in the brass surface, engraving, texture, and patina may occur. These variations are a natural part of handmade craftsmanship.
