Bring the spirit of the Middle Ages to your shield with this hand-forged medieval shield boss umbo, crafted from sturdy 16-gauge steel for strength and historical authenticity. Known as an umbo, the shield boss was a central feature of wooden shields, designed to protect the hand and deflect strikes in battle.
Each boss is available in distinctive styles to reflect different warrior cultures:
-
The Classic Dome Boss
-
The Norse Conical Boss
-
The Germanic Antique Black Boss
Every boss is pre-drilled with mounting holes and comes complete with rivets and washers, making it quick and easy to attach to your shield. Once fitted, it not only reinforces the shield structurally but also gives the authentic look and battlefield function that collectors, reenactors, and LARP fighters seek.
Forged one at a time, each piece carries subtle variations in finish, texture, and patina, the hallmark of genuine handmade craftsmanship. Whether you’re building a shield for reenactment combat, stage performance, LARP adventures, or a display collection, this shield boss provides both strength and historical accuracy.
Installation
-
Make a center hole – In the middle of your wooden shield for the hand grip.
-
Position the boss – Place the shield boss over the hole so it covers the opening.
-
Mark the holes – Use the pre-drilled holes on the boss to mark where you need to drill on the shield.
-
Drill the holes – Drill matching holes in the shield for the rivets.
-
Attach the boss – Put the boss back in place and secure it with the included rivets and washers.
Care Instructions
-
Wipe clean after handling or combat use to remove dirt and oils.
-
Apply a thin coat of oil regularly to prevent rust.
-
Store in a dry location, in a padded bag or wrapped in cloth.
-
If mounted on an active shield, periodically check rivets for tightness.
Note
As each shield boss is individually hand-forged, no two are completely alike. Minor variations in size, texture, or finish are natural.
