This riveted chainmail hauberk is crafted with 9mm flat rings, round riveted in alternating rows with solid flat rings, like the European mail from the 12th to 14th centuries. Each ring is individually dome-riveted by hand, for maximum strength and minimizing the risk of failure due to impact. The alternating pattern of riveted and solid rings makes the mail lasting, flexible and historically accurate. This construction is prized among enthusiasts who prefer a durable hauberk chainmail.

The flat-ring design with alternating solid reinforces the mail as well as resembles original European mail preserved in museums. This chainmail hauberk gives a denser and more protective weave than butted mail, for excellent resilience.

Finished in natural or black mild steel as per choice with a light oil coat, the hauberk maintains a traditional medieval look with basic corrosion resistance. Designed with long sleeves and a mid-thigh length cut, it gives a generous coverage for comfortable and safe wear. Whether used as a mail hauberk, chain mail hauberk, or styled with darker armor pieces such as a black chainmail hauberk, it gives excellent versatility.

This riveted chainmail hauberk is both a functional armor and a collector’s piece of history.

Benefits

  • Battle-Ready Construction: Flat rings, round riveted with alternating flat solid rings outperform butted mail, reducing the chance of links pulling open.
  • Historically Accurate: Based on authentic 13th–14th century European chainmail patterns.
  • Comprehensive Protection: Long sleeves and mid-thigh design shield critical areas during combat or performance.
  • Versatile Applications: Ideal for combat battles, film props, LARP, or display.
  • Custom Fit Options: Multiple sizes available to wear over gambesons or padded under-armor.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS:

  • Prevent Rust: Since this hauberk is made of mild steel, keep it lightly oiled after use.
  • Dry Storage: Store in a cool, dry place. Avoid damp environments which can cause corrosion.
  • Cleaning: After wear, wipe with a dry cloth to remove sweat and moisture. For heavier cleaning, use a mild soap and warm water, then dry thoroughly before re-oiling.
  • Padding Care: If worn over a gambeson, ensure the undergarment is fully dry before storing to prevent trapped moisture.
  • Long-Term Storage: For extended storage, check periodically for spots of oxidation and reapply oil as needed.
  • Avoid Harsh Chemicals: Do not use abrasive cleaners or detergents that may strip protective oil or damage the finish.

Q: What is chainmail?

A: Chainmail is armor made from interlinked metal rings to protect the wearer from cuts and impacts. It was widely used from ancient times through the medieval era.

Q: How much did historical chainmail weigh?

A: A full medieval hauberk typically weighed between 10–15 kg, depending on ring size, length, and sleeve style.

Q: How heavy is this chainmail hauberk?

A: Weight varies by size, but most hauberks fall between 10–12 kg, for protection while remaining wearable for long hours.

Q: Is this hauberk suitable for combat or just costume use?

A: Yes. The alternating flat solid rings and dome-riveted links give battle-ready strength for controlled combat scenarios.

Q: Does the chainmail need padding underneath?

A: Yes. A gambeson or padded jacket is recommended to absorb impact and prevent the rings from pinching or bruising the skin.

Q: Will this chainmail rust over time?

A: Since it is made from mild steel, it will rust without proper care. Keeping it lightly oiled and stored dry will prevent corrosion.

Q: How should I choose the correct size?

A: Choose a size that allows room to wear a gambeson underneath. Chainmail should fit comfortably without restricting movement.

Q: What is the difference between riveted and butted chainmail?

A: Riveted mail has rings secured with small rivets, making it stronger and more durable. Butted mail has rings simply pressed closed and is less suitable for combat use.
