This roman umbo is inspired by shield bosses used during the Roman period, especially on the scutum and parma shields carried from the 1st century onwards. The umbo shield was an important part of Roman defense and later influenced early medieval Germanic shield designs.

In ancient warfare, the shield boss was not just decorative. It had a clear function. The dome-shaped center protected the warrior’s hand, which held the grip behind the shield. It also helped deflect enemy strikes away from the center. In close combat, soldiers could even use the raised boss offensively to push or strike opponents.

Over time, the roman shield umbo became both practical armor and a symbol of disciplined military gear.

This shield boss is crafted from 100% solid brass in 16 gauge thickness. Brass has several advantages:

The surface has a warm golden tone that gradually darkens with age. This natural patina enhances its authentic Roman character.
